SaaS (Software-as-a-Service)
SaaS, pronounced "Sass", is an application delivery model whose
time has come. In fact, more than 60 percent of CIOs plan to use
some form of SaaS, according to a 2006 CIO survey conducted by
management consultants McKinsey & Co., up from just 38 percent who
said the same thing in late 2005. Looking ahead, market analysts at
Gartner Inc. predict the worldwide SaaS market will more than triple
by 2011, jumping from $6.3 billion in 2006 to $19.3 billion in 2011.
Software-as-a-Service provides companies with business
applications hosted by a third party. Companies pay a subscription
fee, rather than a more traditional licensing fee, and they access
the applications over the Internet.
With SaaS applications you save money on:
- - Hardware (purchase, installation, configuration)
- - Software (license, maintenance, support)
- - Consulting (installation, configuration, updates)
- - Support staff
- - Power
- - Facility space
- - Special network connections
- - Administration
Lower Overhead & Increase IT
Effectiveness
SaaS can lower IT costs by helping companies avoid many
traditional overhead expenses. A typical software implementation
involves purchasing, housing and maintaining servers; installing and
maintaining the software; and then training (and sometimes
re-training) staff. None of this is necessary with a SaaS
implementation, at least for small and midsize companies.
IT personnel typically spend 80% of their time on application
maintenance and operations and only 20% on innovation. SaaS removes
the burden of application maintenance and operations from your IT
staff allowing them to focus on value-add activities instead.

The SaaS "pay-as-you-go" subscription model frees companies from
the commitment of long-term software licenses. Where traditional
software involves a cycle of buying a software license, paying for a
service contract and then having to pay for upgrades, small and
midsize firms can instead simply pay a monthly fee, period. In
addition, our SaaS subscriptions are based on usage, you only pay
for what you use.
Unparalleled Customer Satisfaction
Midsized companies surveyed (100 to 499 employees) had a
95%
customer satisfaction rate with their SaaS deployments - we
can’t recall seeing a number that high for anything, let alone
anything associated with software, said Saugatuck Research in the
recently announced preliminary results of their most recent
worldwide survey on SaaS adoption and deployment.
Rapid Setup and Deployment
SaaS helps companies with rapid implementations. In a study
conducted by Nucleus Research, companies that deployed traditional
customer relationship management (CRM) applications typically needed
18 months to do so. But companies that used SaaS-based CRM typically
implemented their applications in just one to three months.
Use it From Anywhere
SaaS also offers increased mobility. Workers at multiple office
locations, on the road, or at home can use the same essential
documents, data, and tools. All you need is Internet access.
Any Size Company
A 2006 survey by Forrester Research, SaaS is a good deal for
companies with 100 - 499 employees. "For companies with 50-100
users, SaaS is a slam dunk," says Ray Wang. View the entire

SaaS Works
SaaS has been proven by small and midsize companies for over a
decade. Success stories like this one are typical:
Among midsize technology companies, users of SaaS sales
applications see sales leads and closes "at least two months
earlier than they would with a traditional system," says R.
"Ray" Wang, a principal analyst at market watchers Forrester
Research in Cambridge, Mass. He adds that a typical return on
investment (ROI) for a SaaS project undertaken by a midsize
company is in the 20 percent to 30 percent range. It's that
high, he adds, simply because a company can turn on and start
using a SaaS solution right away, and with little training
needed.
